Who is this Hall of Famer?

Who is this Hall of Famer?
While waiting to buy ice cream one afternoon in August, 2003, in Provincetown, we encountered this retired athlete, one of the most celebrated sports stars in northern North America and Europe. He practically invented his position and won many championships and MVP awards. There is a very famous poster image of him in scoring position in the final game of the championship series at mid-career in 1970. Everyone in the shop seemed to know who he was, but despite the general excitement of his proximity, no one asked for an autograph or otherwise hounded him. I sneaked this candid shot from waist level with flash off.

(Reminds me of the time Al and Tipper Gore ate dinner at the table next to us in a Vietnamese restaurant in Boston. None of the waiters or diners betrayed any interest in the Gores — not, I think, to spare the Gores any harassment; rather to avoid appearing to be unsophisticated. When the Gores finished their meal and stood up to leave the restaurant, one family asked them to pose for a photo with their small child, which they did with good grace.)
